A Smiths Beach icon has permanently shut its doors but an exciting new venture is set to open that will bring night-life to the coastal town.

Smiths Beach General Store closed on April 12 with owners “heartbroken” by the decision.

In Facebook post, owner Donna said she loved the community spirit and appreciated how welcoming locals were.

“Chris and I have enjoyed our time here, so very much, we are sorry to be leaving,” she said.

“However there is always a silver lining.”

Despite the closure of another Phillip Island store devastating the community, locals are excited for a cafe and bar to open in its place.

Smiths Bar and Beach Food owners Sharyn Walls and Troy Sibson told The Bass Coast News they saw potential in the 219-221 Smiths Beach Rd property earlier this year.

“When the opportunity came up to take possession of the space, my partner and I saw our dream become a vision with an actual address,” Ms Walls said.

“I love its position and the layout and design are so tasteful and efficient.”

Ms Walls and Mr Sibson moved to the island after owning a holiday home at Smiths Beach for seven years.

They plan to operate the cafe seven days a week with it officially opening in May.

“We have partnered with some preferred suppliers to bring great coffee, beverages and some basic necessities,” Ms Walls said.

Ms Walls said plans are underway to get approval for outdoor seating and a liquor licence in order to develop part of the space into a cocktail bar.

“Troy and I are both very social and like to see people enjoying themselves out,” she said.

“We like to go to bars and see what people are enjoying.”

The couple said it will be the perfect place for a date or a night out with friends and will offer spirits and cocktails with charcuterie, cheeses and share plates.

The bar will be opened on Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm to 11pm.
