A Phillip Island man has fulfilled his quest to paint the outside of his house rainbow despite abuse and homophobic comments from online trolls.
More than 100 people joined Mykey O’Halloran and helped decorate the exterior of his Wimbledon Heights property on April 18.
Mr O’Halloran told The Bass Coast News it took about seven hours to finish.
“People drove down from Melbourne to show support,” he said.
“People bought snacks for the painters and dropped by to say ‘hello’ after hearing what had happened.”
Mr O’Halloran has been subject to continued online bullying after he was allegedly verbally assaulted at his home on March 16.
A 23-year-old Wimbledon Heights man charged with making threats to kill and unlawful assault.
“It’s just crazy to see the lengths that these internet trolls go to,” he said.
“It’s not okay and it’s not acceptable in this day and age.”
Mr O’Halloran said the colour of his house was not a move designed to represent his sexuality.
“I’m a gay man and I’m open and I’m proud to be,” he said.
“I express colour naturally as I’m a rainbow hair artist and I’m creative.”
The 29-year-old said he has tried his best to ignore online vitriol.
“What I’ve learnt mostly this week after having my name dragged through the mud by multiple people online and in public forums is that it’s all just a bunch of opinions,” he said
“At the end of the day I know what’s in my heart and what my pure intentions are.”
Mr O’Halloran said it was heartwarming to see the support from the community.
“The message we must take out of this situation is to stand your ground and don’t let bullies tell you how you should be living your life.”
