A mechanic caught stealing two jet skis from a Venus Bay property told he was just moving them for someone.

Jason Napier — who appeared via an online web link — fronted the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a charge of handling/receiving/disposing of stolen goods.

The court heard the 39-year-old went to a property in Venus Bay and took two jet skis that were on a boat trailer in June last year.

The owner of the jet skis realised they were missing and reported it to police.

In July last year, Napier covered the jet skis with a sheet, believed to be at an address he was staying at, before police arrived at the home the next day and towed them from the property.

Napier told police he didn’t steal the jetskis, but was asked to move them for someone who he did not name to officers.

The court heard the jet skis were returned to their owner.

The court also heard Napier has a prior criminal history, attends drug counselling twice a week and cared for his mother full time.

Napier also recently finished serving an eight-month jail term, which Magistrate Tim Walsh took into account when sentencing him.

Napier was fined $500 with a conviction.
