A Bass Coast woman who tragically died after she was hit by a car while walking a dog has been remembered as the most “adored and lovely” lady.
68-year-old Heather Mills was taken to hospital in a critical condition after the crash on Campbell St, Wonthaggi just before 4pm Sunday but later died.
The Wonthaggi woman, who would have turned 69 this month, was described as a loving person of the community.
Ms Mills was a member of Voyage Fitness Wonthaggi for 11 years and attended an active adults class on a regular basis.
Speaking to the Herald Sun, the team said Heather was always friendly and willing to do anything for anyone.
“(She was) always smiling — she was the most lovely, adored lady,” the Voyage Fitness family said.
“We had known Heather for a while.”
The team gave their deepest condolences to Heather’s loved ones.
In memory of Heather and the dog, locals paid their respects and left flowers on Campbell St.
Tributes also flowed on Facebook for the pair.
“I knew Heather from the gym. She was a lovely lady,” user Vicki Thompson said.
“Such a lovely lady. Always up for a chat. Condolences to her family,” Carol Butler wrote.
“So sad rip lovely lady and the dog,” Grantville local David Cooper commented.
The alleged driver, Sampath Jayasundara from Narre Warren North, was charged with culpable driving and faced the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The court heard the 47-year-old allegedly recorded a BAC of 0.19 after the collision and had “some issues with alcohol leading up to the incident”.
Police allege Mr Jayasundara was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision and continued driving before returning to the scene a short time later.
He was then arrested by MCIU detectives.
Mr Jayasundara, who did not apply for bail, was remanded in custody and will return to court in July.
