A man charged over a fatal collision has “issues with alcohol” and was almost four times the legal limit when he allegedly struck a woman walking a dog on the Bass Coast.
Sampath Jayasundara, 47, fronted Latrobe Valley Magistrates Country on Monday afternoon after the incident in Wonthaggi on Sunday.
The Narre Warren North man was charged with culpable driving after allegedly striking the Wonthaggi woman, walking her neighbour’s dog on Campbell St.
The 68-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition where she later died while the dog died at the scene.
The court heard Mr Jayasundara recorded a BAC of 0.19 after the collision and had “some issues with alcohol leading up to the incident”.
Earlier police alleged Mr Jayasundara was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision and initially continued driving before returning to the scene a short time later where he was arrested by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives.
Mr Jayasundara was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in July.
He did not apply for bail.
In memory of the woman and the dog, flowers were left at the scene on Campbell St.
