Grantville supermarket: Why community needs development

Grantville residents are crying out for a supermarket but how long will they have to wait? It’s time this and other developments are fast-tracked for the area, writes Brooke Grebert-Craig.

Grantville residents have been advocating for years to have a supermarket in their town.

Now, the idea is one step closer to being achieved after the proposed development got full support from Bass Coast Shire councillors in December last year.

But how long will residents have to wait to see the construction of the supermarket start?

There’s more than 800 residents who have to travel more than 30 minutes to either San Remo, Wonthaggi or Koo Wee Rup to do a decent shop.

This is absurd and residents deserve better.

Along with servicing people in Grantville, the supermarket would benefit residents in Coronet Bay, Corinella, Tenby Point, Pioneer Bay, The Gurdies and Bass.

Some may say the lack of a local supermarket is the price you pay for living in a regional area, but that’s no reason to dismiss how unfair it is for people to travel great distances — while also spending a lot of money — to get basic needs.

The proposed supermarket development also includes a medical centre, pharmacy, service station and several retail spaces.

In a separate development across the road, a Corinella resident plans to open a grocer, beer garden and cafe at the old Mitre 10 building this year.

The owner will hire around 20 to 30 locals which is a great opportunity for residents who are unable to drive or catch the bus to other towns to secure work.

It’s an exciting time for the community and frankly Grantville deserves it.

Imagine the endless opportunities that could arise — a police station and bigger library have all been on the minds of residents for some time.

New developments will not only support the locals but encourage holidaymakers to make Grantville their destination rather than a pit stop to Phillip Island or Inverloch.

It’s time to stop overlooking the waterline community.

They have a lot to offer, which further cements the fact the Bass Coast is the best place to live in Victoria.
