The rain didn’t stop racing enthusiasts from turning out in droves for the RoadNats 2024 and we snapped the cheering faces in the crowd.
Threats of 100ml of rain and flood warnings across Central Victoria didn’t stop the main event on Sunday, January 7, a series of heated road races held in the township of Buninyong, near Ballarat.
Riders started on Warrenheip St, before a gruelling course of steep inclines around Mt Buninyong, Federation University and then back to the township.
The women’s race started at 9.20am, spanning 104.4km over nine laps featuring star riders Grace Brown, Amanda Spratt, Brodie Chapman, Sarah Gigante, Emily Watts.
The men’s race kicked off at 1pm, stretching 185.6km over 16 laps with crowd favourite competitors Luke Plapp, Caleb Ewan, Simon Clarke, James Whelan, Matthew Dinham.
But the real stars were the fans who came out to cheer on the athletes while the rain soaked them through as the riders demonstrated spectacular feats of athleticism despite the foul weather.
