At Borella Butchery it’s the diversity of their products that owner Jared Gerahty thinks makes them the best in the business.

Borella Butchery was voted Albury-Wodonga’s best butcher by the local community.

Mr Gerahty opened Borella Butchery three years ago, after working in butcher’s shops since he was 14.

He said he jumped at the opportunity to open his own business.

“I didn’t think it would get this big and keep on growing the way it’s growing but it’s doing it,” Mr Gerahty said.

“I started with me and my old man and a second year apprentice, and that didn’t last long, we had to put on more butchers and a chef and another apprentice and now it’s crazy.

“We have a commercial kitchen out there where the chef works, and a full small good factory out the back.”

After winning the best ham in NSW and the third best in Australia last year, Borella Butchery has gathered a following of foodies who keep coming back.

“We have a great community of people, it’s just foodies.

“From any walk of life, it’s anybody who likes food.

“If they’re after different pastries or quick, easy dinners, or decent beef short ribs, it’s just food people.”

Mr Gerahty said his passion for food developed a bit later in life, after he’d been working in the industry for a few years.

“When I was 15 I just thought ‘knives are fun, knives are sharp’, but I fell into loving food when I moved to Queensland and worked for a chef up there for three years,” he said.

“She had a butcher’s shop and was doing all cooked meals and that’s where I learnt all the boutique little bits and bobs and it became something more than just steaks and chops, I started having some creative fun.”
