Perfect, a guest n the Fox FM marquee in The Birdcage, told Confidential: “Everybody is asking me: ‘Are you playing Shane Warne?’ I’m telling you here, categorically, I’m not.

“It’s no judgment on Shane, who is a lovely person. But if I play Shane Warne in a telemovie, that’s it. I’m a Shane Warne impersonator for the rest of my life,” Perfect said. “I’ve got to do my own thing.”

Spin king Warne — who was today on a winner for the Melbourne Cup — is opposed to the planned Channel Seven biopic.

Perfect wrote, and starred in, the theatre hit Shane Warne: The Musical — which Warne also initially opposed, but eventually warmed to the show.

Perfect said he wrote the musical as a wider commentary about sporting celebrity.

“Shane has got no filter. He’ll tell whatever is on his mind. He’s one of the happiest people I’ve ever met. He has no regrets and he looks forward,” Perfect said.

“But the one thing I noticed when I was doing the musical was the way the media would treat me. You become this construct, almost the butt of a joke. (Warne) was an incredible sportsman, but controversial off it. Some people have this image of him as a buffoon. So it was interesting to impersonate him and to suddenly feel that.”

Perfect said he hopes the telemovie isn’t based on author Paul Barry’s unauthorised biography of Warne. “That was, by far, the snarkiest and meanest of them all.”
