Not even a burst of chilling wind and rain could dampen the roar of the crowd as international raider Mer De Glace claimed the $5 million Caulfield Cup yesterday.
The Japanese horse, with Damian Lane aboard, thundered home as the heavens opened and drenched the more than 28,000 racegoers at the track.
It was the five-year-old’s sixth consecutive win and first on Australian soil. Cheery racegoers battled fickle weather conditions all day, with bouts of blue skies evenly matched with cold gusts and drizzle.
Bold colour, longer hemlines and suiting were style standouts trackside, although true to Melbourne form monochrome black and white were also popular, as were neutral shades.
Melbourne Racing Club special guest Georgia Fowler was stunning in a chic latte-coloured Fendi long lined dress with sheer sleeves.
Olympia Valance also opted for a neutral blush dress by Oglia-Loro, teamed with a Statue of Liberty-inspired headpiece in keeping with the New York City theme of the carnival.
Stella Artois special guest Shanina Shaik and Rebecca Harding were both beautiful in black, while Steph Claire Smith and Brooke Hogan made a statement trackside in white.
But it was forever fashion-forward Rebecca Judd who turned heads in an incredible futuristic metallic Toni Maticevski jumpsuit and cape.
“I just love the sci-fi vibe to this outfit,” Judd said. “I love David Bowie, I think this has a Bowie vibe and I think he’d approve.”
David Jones ambassador Jessica Gomes also opted for Maticevski in classic cream while fellow David Jones face Victoria Lee had fun in a floaty yellow and black print dress from Camilla and Marc.
It was the first time Gomes had been dressed by the Melbourne-based designer. “I’m so happy, I’ve never worn Toni Maticevski. I love this dress,” Gomes said.
Lee lamented the lack of sunshine but didn’t let the chilly weather dampen her enthusiasm for her frock.
“I wish it was a tad warmer but I love this dress. I love the silhouette and the slits at the side,” she said.
Green is superstitiously regarded as an unlucky colour in racing but Caulfield Cup Carnival ambassador Laura Dundovic glowed in a custom mint-green mini from Jason Grech, as did Rianna Ponting in emerald-green Alex Perry.
Head scarfs and headbands were popular choices to combat blustery conditions.
Earlier in the day, a group of about 50 activists stood at the racecourse’s front gates and protested against animal cruelty
