Patricia Ilhan has praised her daughter for speaking out about her alleged rape as a schoolgirl.

The widow of retail tycoon Crazy John Ilhan is standing by her eldest daughter Yasmin, who revealed in May she had been “left in tears” after reporting the incident to Victoria Police.

Ms Ilhan said she was proud of her daughter for having the courage to speak up.

“She has got a voice and I’m proud of her for having that voice,” Ms Ilhan said.

“It takes generations for culture to change.”

The Ilhan’s will use the resilience they’ve built through tackling other family challenges to get through this too.

Yasmin Ilhan, 23, is now living in London as a law student.

She posted publicly on social media claims she was raped at a birthday party by a Caulfield Grammar student when she was 15.

Yasmin was studying at Melbourne Girls Grammar at the time.

“I was raped by (name) when I was 15,” she wrote.

“I reported it to Vic Police last year and recently found out they will not be charging him.

“I am horrified by how the police have treated me: they antagonised me, made me cry, spoke over me and dismissed me. They have repeatedly refused to answer my questions about their decision.”

Yasmin said she was “so tired of having to fight against this culture and system”.

“Many girls have reached out to tell me that they (or someone they know) had a similar experience with (name),” she wrote.

“The police have not just failed me, but all these other victims.”

A police spokeswoman said at the time after a “thorough investigation” there was “insufficient material to commence a criminal prosecution”.

“Police supported the victim throughout the reporting process and provided access to appropriate services for ongoing support and assistance,” they said.
