Yasmin Ilhan revealed she is the victim of vicious trolling after speaking out about being allegedly raped by a private school student.
The eldest daughter of late “Crazy John” retail tycoon John Ilhan said the responses she had received following her claims she was raped at aged 15 by a private schoolboy at a birthday party were “sad”.
“I can’t believe we live in a society where people feel comfortable making jokes like this,” Ms Ilhan posted to Instagram.
She included a screenshot of a vile and lewd post directed towards her.
“It’s so sad some of the responses I’m getting – being viewed as the problem for speaking up, rather than viewing him as the problem for raping me.”
Ms Ilhan also retweeted a post criticising the “lack of empathy and misrepresentation of the law” were contributors to victims; reluctance to report.
Ms Ilhan, 23, who now lives in London, posted on Instagram on Thursday that she was raped at 15 – when studying at Melbourne Girls Grammar – by a Caulfield Grammar student.
“I was raped by (name) when I was 15,” she wrote.
“I reported it to Vic Police last year and recently found out they will not be charging him.
“I am horrified by how the police have treated me: they antagonised me, made me cry, spoke over me and dismissed me. They have repeatedly refused to answer my questions about their decision.
“They said I contradicted my own evidence, yet they failed to back this up when I asked for examples.”
Ms Ilhan alleged she was told the fact she has a law degree “raises concerns” about her story. “After a year of being assured by the police that he would be charged, my case was closed and I was not given answers,” she wrote.
Ms Ilhan said she was “so tired of having to fight against this culture and system”.
“Many girls have reached out to tell me that they (or someone they know) had a similar experience with (name),” she wrote.
“The police have not just failed me, but all these other victims.” A police spokeswoman said Moorabbin Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Team detectives conducted a “thorough investigation” into a report of a sexual assault at a house in Glen Iris in February, 2013.
“After assessing all available evidence, the reporting person was advised that there was insufficient material to commence a criminal prosecution and the investigation had concluded,” the spokeswoman said.
“Police supported the victim throughout the reporting process and provided access to appropriate services for ongoing support and assistance.”
The Herald Sun has contacted the accused man for comment.
