Beauty of ageing: Super models reveal secrets to embracing 60s

Swedish supermodel Paulina Porizkova and Aussie icon Elle Macpherson are among famous faces now aged 60 or over who say they feel liberated by ageing, with the former revealing the lessons she’s learnt about beauty over time.

Unfiltered, bad lighting, no posing — all natural.

No longer are we hearing about “the invisible woman syndrome”, females in their 60s are showing up and some, proudly showing their natural figures.

To be fair when you look like Swedish supermodel Paulina Porizkova in a teeny weeny white triangle bikini, or for that matter even in beige bra and undies with your grey hair messily pulled back in an unfiltered bathroom selfie, you still come off looking smoking hot.

But it is the 60-year-old former runway model and famous face of Estee Lauder beauty, message which is what is most resonating — that women of all ages are beautiful and strong, filtered or not.

Juxtaposing two images of herself she highlighted the differences, saying she can be all things.

“This is me. Vacation, pretty light, posing for a shot,” she said of the first picture smiling for the camera, posing with a flattering angle on holiday in a bikini with picturesque view.

“This is also me,” she shared of the second picture of herself, unfiltered and barefaced in a nude bra and underwear in a bathroom, rocking grey hair. “Home, not great light, not posing.”

“This is 60,” Porizkova wrote to her 1.2 million followers, receiving thousands of comments in support.

“This is 60 years of sometimes healthy eating, sometimes not. 60 years of sometimes working out, sometimes not.

60 years of doing the right things followed by doing the wrong things and over again and again.

“It’s 60 years of learning of what works and what doesn’t.

And just as I think I’ve figured it out, everything changes and I have to start again.

“It’s 60 years of learning of what works and what doesn’t.

“The beauty of 60 is that now I understand the importance is IN the lesson, not passing the exam.”

Just this week Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson was fronting a new fashion campaign as the new face of luxury Aussie athleisure brand The Upside at 62-years-of-age.

While the Aussie supermodel’s glamorous poolside Miami shoot looked a far cry from Porizkova’s unfiltered bathroom selfie, Macpherson also shared the same message, that she has never felt “more free and alive” as in her 60s.

But 56-year-old pop diva Mariah Carey was perhaps sending a different message when she fronted Harper’s Bazaar magazine, filtered, smoothed and wrinkle-free, claiming in her oh so Mariah way that she just doesn’t do “ageing.”

Hmmm maybe it’s a sixties thing. Different strokes.

Elsewhere Melbourne model and granny Violeta Zuvela always had a dream of appearing in the pages of Vogue magazine. She just didn’t think it would happen on the day she celebrated her 60th birthday.

“Just a grandmamma in Vogue. This is 60,” Zuvela laughs.

The statuesque grey haired beauty from Chadwick models said the “pinch me” moment of finding she was covered in a feature for Singapore Vogue was just another move that barriers around age are breaking down.

“Nothing is beyond your reach,” Zuvela said.

Porizkova has spoken out about ageing before.

“I feel like we’re so scared of wrinkles,” Porizkova said during a US TV talk show appearance earlier this year.

“Have you noticed that? We’re so terrified of wrinkles because I suppose wrinkles make us no longer relevant, no longer sexy, no longer desirable, and as women, that has been sort of our calling card — it’s tagged with us for such a long time.”

“And I keep looking at wrinkles — mine, yours, any woman that I see — and I think, ‘It’s your map of life,’” she continued. “I see how you are as a person. Why would you want to erase it?”
