Page 13: Jockey Jamie Kah probed by Racing Victoria stewards over white powder photo scandal

Racing Victoria has interviewed jockey Jamie Kah and launched an investigation over the white powder photo scandal.

Video appears to show Jamie Kah racking lines of white powder

Jamie Kah has been interviewed by Victorian racing stewards over the white powder photo scandal.

Racing Victoria launched an investigation last week after Page 13 revealed photos and a video of the superstar jockey dividing fat lines of white powder on a plate after it had circulated on social media.

The stewards are looking to decide whether Kah’s actions breach any rules of racing and warrant a sanction.

Stewards have also spoken to Kah’s flatmate, greyhound trainer Jacob Biddell, who featured in the damning video.

Greyhound Racing Victoria is also scrutinising Biddell for possible infractions of racing regulations, marking the second such inquiry into the matter.

Kah, 27, had only just returned to the saddle in the days prior to the video surfacing following a horrific fall at Flemington Racecourse back in March.

She spent three weeks in hospital including several days in an induced coma with bleeding to the brain. She also suffered a fractured wrist and broken foot.

Victoria’s leading jockey does not currently have a racing license due to medical grounds.

She successfully passed two neurological exams to be cleared for “light duties”, riding in trackwork at Mornington and Cranbourne just days before the scandal broke.

She was still due to complete a “balance” neurological test in July to be eligible to ride in jump outs, official trials and races again.

Kah has gone to ground since the scandal broke, her only comments coming on social media straight afterwards.

“I am determined to focus on my health and recovery following my race fall in March which left me with a serious brain injury and being in hospital for 3 weeks,” Kah said.

“I am working hard to get back to doing what I love, and that is being a passionate and successful jockey.

“I will continue to focus on my physical and mental health and making a full recovery so I can return to racing and be the best person that I can possibly be.

“I won’t be making any further comment.”

Kah, who had chalked up 59 Group 1 winners before her injury, is still leading the Melbourne Jockeys Premiership table in Victoria.

She made history in 2020-21 as the first female jockey to win the Melbourne premiership. She also became the first jockey in 20 years to ride more than 100 winners (105) in a single season.

But she has also been a magnet for trouble and was banned from riding for attending a gathering at a Mornington Airbnb after Melbourne’s curfew during the Covid-19 pandemic.
