Heartbroken City of Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter has spoken of her shock after publicly announcing her engagement — only to call it off just 24 hours later after devastating cheating claims.

Ms Carter announced her engagement on Facebook on the weekend, but her joy was short-lived when she was contacted by a third party who had seen her celebratory post.

Speaking with the Herald Sun, a stoic Ms Carter said she was now trying to deal with the fallout of the sudden split privately.

“It’s too soon and too raw,” Ms Carter said yesterday.

“I’ve gone through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in a very short space in time and am just trying to get through it with family and friends,” she said.

Rewind to the weekend and Ms Carter was gushing and giddy about her impending nuptials with her ad man boyfriend of eight months Aaron Lipson.

Posting pictures of the happy couple showing off her new bobby dazzler engagement ring, Carter said she was the “luckiest woman in all the world.”

“On Saturday the most amazing man I’ve ever chanced upon, got down on one knee and proposed.

“I, of course, rushed to say ‘yes’ and just like that, we’re engaged to be married,” Carter posted with smiling pictures of her and Lipson.

“I’m the luckiest girl in all the world and can’t wait to be your wife Aaron Lipson — love you to the moon and back.”

The post received hundreds of comments and likes, along with well wishes and gifts of flowers and champagne sent.

After spending the weekend celebrating their happy engagement news with family and friends, it’s understood Ms Carter received a phone call from a third party who had also seen the post.

She again posted to Facebook, but this time not in the same vein.

“Turns out Aaron Lipson was cheating on me the whole time. Obviously the wedding is off,” Carter claimed on her Facebook page on Tuesday.

“Be careful ladies and thank you to the woman for telling me, best to know now.

“I’m obviously terribly embarrassed.”

Ms Carter said in hindsight she probably wouldn’t have posted the message on Facebook.

But having to deal with telling hundreds of wellwishers individually that the wedding was off, after just announcing the news, was too much to bear.

“We are humans too, I know we are in the public, but we are also human.”

Labor preselection candidate Ms Carter was appointed mayor of Maribyrnong in 2011, working as the gender equity ambassador and instrumental in the development of the city’s Festival City which runs later this month.

Mr Lipson, who has worked on campaigns for Nike, Spring Carnival Racing, Jeep and Dairy Australia, told the Herald Sun on Wednesday he did not wish to comment.

“This is a private matter we’re working through and don’t want to comment,” Mr Lipson responded when contacted by the Herald Sun.
