AFL coaching legend Alastair Clarkson was quizzed by police as he helped himself to some bluestone bricks in Albert Park last week.
Two curious coppers asked why the four-time premiership coach was loading the building materials into his vehicle on swanky St Vincent Place last Thursday.
Clarko told the PoPo he was a “keen gardener” and “currently unemployed.”
Gardening leave more like it!
The ex-Hawthorn coach is the hottest property in the AFL with clubs lining up to hire him whenever he decides to make a return.
It seems the two police women who were quizzing Clarko didn’t realise who they were dealing with until a male officer later recognised one of footy’s most familiar faces.
To be fair to Clarko, picking up a bit of hard rubbish from the kerb in the affluent ‘burbs is hardly out of bounds, its dinky di the Aussie way.
We went to the much-loved coach who happily explained the situation.
“I was grabbing some broken bluestone that I believed had been dug up and abandoned from a roadwork site,” Clarkson told Page 13 on Friday.
“The police stopped to check what I was doing. They have confirmed they have no issue with my conduct.”
The last time Clarko was seen getting his hands dirty at the roadside was when he was a volunteer in country Victoria doing a bit of fence repair during the bushfires.
The master coach has always been a straight shooter.
