ESSENDON great Jobe Watson admits he is nervously waiting to become a father with his partner, Virginia Slaghekke, expecting their first child next month.

ESSENDON great Jobe Watson admits he is nervously waiting to become a father with his partner, Virginia Slaghekke, expecting their first child next month.

“We have five weeks to go before due date,” Watson said.

“I am excited, but nervous.

“Everyone asks if you are prepared and I just say I have a room where the baby sleeps and that is probably as prepared as you can be.”

Virginia Slaghekke is due to give birth in five weeks.

Speaking at a recent Bellamy’s Organic launch, Slaghekke said she was grateful Watson had handed her his number written on a napkin in New York in mid 2016 and that she had eventually called him.

“It is all about chance you know, I just got lucky,” she said.

“(It was) right place, right time and he was brave enough to do it.

“You look at it back later and everything happens for a reason. It was meant to be.”

She said she and Watson were delighted to be starting a family.

“We are very excited, it is a big change, it is kind of like diving in the deep end, you don’t know what to expect,” she said.

The internationally successful model is on track to graduate as a biomedical scientist this year.

“I am going to take a year off to be with the baby and then I will go to medical school here (Melbourne) the following year,” she said.

“You always have to make a place home. I have found my place here, I am very happy to be here.”
