STEPHEN Quartermain was all class as he signed off with a simple but emotive “thank you’’ as Channel 10’s Melbourne news anchor for the final time on Friday night.

And it was with a glass of 1997 Penfolds Grange that he acknowledged his tenure as the face of the network’s Melbourne bulletin.

The respected journalist and accomplished presenter exited the newsdesk hot seat with quiet dignity after almost 33 years with Ten and more than three years as weekday newsreader.

There was no fanfare and no explicit mention made of the end of his role, but viewers were left in no doubt that it was an emotion-charged moment for Quartermain.

His Ten news colleague Sandra Sully led the shoutouts to Quartermain, posting on Instagram: “Wow @stephen.quartermain I am going to miss you ... but understand. New chapters now for you and onwards and upwards. You are such a talent and just a great bloke! Let’s stay in touch my friend. #EndOfAnEra.”

His former co-host Candice Wyatt paid him an emotional tribute.

“The end of an era. My colleague, my sounding board, my voice of reason, my best friend, my “work husband”, my mentor. You’re all of the above @stephen.quartermain and so much more … But it’s time for your next chapter.”

Jennifer Keyte will take the news reins from tomorrow after sensationally quitting Channel 7 and signing with Ten last month.

Quartermain was always taking a break in June, having booked three weeks’ leave several months ago.

He is yet to make a decision about his future.

He is contracted to Ten until the end of the year and the network is still keen for him to remain part of Melbourne news team as sports presenter.
