Geoffrey Edelsten leaves ex-wives Brynne Edelsten and Gabi Grecko nothing in will

Geoffrey Edelsten’s estate may have been worth $1m when he died, but that doesn’t mean he left anything to his ex-wives. He didn’t forget his favourite sports club though.

Geoffrey Edelsten farewelled at private funeral

Controversial Melbourne business identity Geoffrey Edelsten has left his two most famous wives, Gabi Grecko and Brynne Edelsten, nothing in his will.

And he has left his only child, Matthew Beard, just $50,000, plus $1000 per year from 2017 until Edelsten’s death.

Mr Beard was the only close family member to attend Edelsten’s funeral last year.

Edelsten’s will, which was drawn up in September 2017, was probated this week. He died in Melbourne in June last year aged 78.

His estate was valued at just over $1m.

“I have limited the benefit conferred on Matthew Beard under the Will after serious consideration …..for the reason that during my lifetime I have provided substantial financial support to him at the request of his mother without question despite having limited contact with him,” the will stated.

“I made almost all of those payments at times when I myself was in financial difficulty.”

Of Brynne Edelsten, named as Brynne Gordon in the will, and Grecko, who is referred to in the document as his wife and by her real name of Gabriella Rose Curtis, he detailed why he was leaving them nothing. He does not mention his first wife Leanne Edelsten in the will.

“I have made no provision for my former wife Brynne Gordon as we are divorced and I had made substantial and excessive provision for her during my marriage to her,” the will states.

“I have made no provision for my wife Gabriella Rose Curtis as we have been separated for some time and I had made substantial and excessive provision for her during my marriage to her.

“If any person who is to benefit from the provisions of this will contests my will or any of the bequests made herein, that person shall forfeit any and all entitlements under this my will and such forfeited entitlement will form part of my residuary estate.”

The will details others who did benefit from Edelsten’s generosity.

He left $300,000 to longtime friend, Lewi Karalis and up to $100,000 – 10 per cent of his gross estate – to the Carlton Football Club Foundation and an equal amount to his former school, Mount Scopus Memorial College.

Edelsten requested his trustees, Michael Webb and Lindsay Hosking, who are also noted in the will as his co-executors, to distribute the residue of his estate equally between four charities, The Fight Cancer Foundation Melbourne, the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Fred Hollows Foundation, “for general purposes as the institutions in their absolute discretion think fit”.

Edelsten’s son, Matthew Beard, declined to comment on the will when contacted.
