Butt cleavage, it is a thing and it was a hot and eye-popping topic at the prestigious NGV Gala last weekend where fashion, celebrity, art and money collided in style.
US actor and fashion art aficionado, Julia Fox, brought a little backside baring peek-a-boo to Melbourne’s version of the Met Gala in an extraordinary handmade chain mail gown by Melbourne designer Ella Jackson’s Catholic Guilt label.
Bum cleavage is exactly what it sounds like - the cleavage between buttocks being featured or accentuated by clothing. It is very much having its fashion moment with New York Magazine’s The Cut declaring in April that ‘cracks are back.’
Jackson said Fox’s cheeky butt cleavage was designed to be a feature of what was already an incredible dress - a dress that took 700 hours to construct.
“We had a team of maybe five or six people having to squeeze the butt in and get it to sit in the right position to create the ultimate butt cleavage,” Jackson said.
“Chain mail is not a stretchy material so you have to be creative about how you tailor it and get it to fit onto the body. I knew I needed there to be a plunging backline and I was aware there would probably end up having to be some butt cleavage involved, so I decided to fully lean into it and make it a feature on the dress.
“I was a bit worried before the fitting that Julia would not be into it, but that was her favourite part of the dress. I was glad that she enjoyed that.”
Backsides have been having their moment on red carpets this year with the likes of
Emily Ratajkowski, Katy Perry, musician CMAT, Noah Cyrus and Kendall Jenner among those showing plenty of cheek.
