An era of TV history in Melbourne comes to a close on Sunday night as Channel 7 delivers its final news bulletin from its famous home on Harbour Esplanade in the Docklands.
After 24 years broadcasting from the waterside strip, Seven’s Melbourne moves fully into its new HQ at Melbourne Quarter Tower (MQT) on Collins Street.
Peter Mitchell, Rebecca Maddern and Jane Bunn will present the first evening bulletin from the network’s state of the art new studios on Monday.
Making the departure from its old site final, the huge red number 7 was craned off the side of the building on Friday.
Mitchell, Seven’s iconic Melbourne news anchor, has been the face of 7News since the very first broadcast at the Harbour Esplanade site in March 2002.
“There’s a tinge of sadness about it for sure,” Mitchell said of the move.
“I take great pride in looking back and knowing that I’ve been the main guy in the history of 7News at Docklands. It has been my privilege to be the face of 7News Melbourne and to represent all our staff who work so hard during all hours of the day. Believe me, that is not something I ever take for granted.”
He said Seven’s viewers could expect some subtle changes from the new studio.
“The first thing the viewers will notice is the clarity and crispness of our new screens, so our graphics will be better and brighter and the whole look will be much cleaner,” he said.
“They will also notice that our new studio is much bigger, so when I’m in the chair, you’ll see that Jane and Bec have more walking to do.”
