‘Roaming Brian’, Channel 7’s sometimes gruff, hard line AFL commentator Brian ‘Bristle’ Taylor has put his foot down on a proposed new nickname.
Taylor, who has become a grandfather for the first time with the arrival of his son Ryan’s first child, Noah, six weeks ago, baulked at the suggestion his grandson could refer to him as ‘Grumps.’
“They wanted to call me ‘Grumps’ because I am so grumpy, but I disallowed that and it is going to be Grandpa,” Taylor said.
“This is the very first one, the first grandchild for my wife and I, so we are very happy. It does feel a little strange, particularly now that I am sleeping with a grandma.
“Looking forward to seeing Noah grow up and having many more grandchildren as well, because we do have four boys so it will be interesting to see what they serve up.”
Taylor, a champion player with Richmond and Collingwood during his footy career, was starting early influencing Noah’s interest in AFL.
“I do see the day when we go to the footy together. I am not sure who he is going to barrack for, but the Collingwood flag has gone up in the house already,” he said.
Taylor said Father’s Day had taken on a different significance this year with the arrival of the next generation of his family.
“No more gifts, please; no more chainsaws, no more lawnmowers, no more hedge trimmers, just give me Noah, that will be absolutely fantastic,” he said.
