Is this a new sporting ‘it’ couple in the making?
Melbourne model and fashion identity Demi Brereton, who made a splash last week as one of the ambassadors for the Victoria Racing Club’s bold and some would say unnecessary gender free revolution of Flemington’s Fashions On The Field competition, has emerged as a WAG.
Brereton appeared on the blue carpet at the North Melbourne Football Club’s best and fairest dinner on Thursday on the arm of club vice-captain Jy Simpkin.
The stylish pair posed up a storm on the media wall, something they should get used to doing as Brereton’s Melbourne Cup Carnival commitments kick in.
They are about to be inundated with invitations from PRs looking to freshen up their guest lists.
Simpkin was awarded the Syd Barker Medal as the Kangaroo’s best and fairest player for the 2022 season.
Brereton is the daughter of former top jockey Danny Brereton and was previously the Moonee Valley Friday Night Lights Ambassador. She has grown up around racing and is a regular racegoer.
Simpkin is one of the shining lights at the Kangaroos in the club’s dark days as it goes through a horrendous slump and starts on the long rebuild road.
He was one of just three players to get the thumbs up from Gary Buckenara who assessed the current North Melbourne team in a Herald Sun article last week.
He declared North had “the worst list in the competition by the length of the MCG,” and wrote of newly appointed coach Alastair Clarkson “there is no hiding the job he faces transforming a woeful list.”
On the right track for love
The Flemington Birdcage was the place where cupid’s arrow hit for Richmond premiership player Nathan Broad and Tayla Damir.
The couple, who are set to tie the knot in a matter of weeks, will return to where the sparks of their romance ignited for this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“He is definitely my soulmate and brings out the best in me which is really nice,” Damir said of the Tiger star.
“Nathan and I know each other from Perth, but we somewhat rekindled that relationship when we were at Cup Day in the Birdcage a few years ago, so it is really exciting for the birdcage to be back and we get to share that experience together again,” she said.
Damir, a Myer fashion ambassador, will be involved with Fashions On The Field this year, but another fashion moment is looming large in her life – her wedding gown.
With the end of the footy season fast approaching it is the start of wedding season for players and their partners while they are free of training and club commitments.
Damir celebrated her ‘hen’s’ night over the weekend and has entrusted Melbourne couturier Sam Oglialoro to create two gowns for her wedding.
“I have full faith in Sam, we have worked together a lot,” she said.
“There will be a dress change, I will have two dresses. I think it is nice to have something you can relax and dance in, rather than be in the dress you wore for the ceremony all night.”
Meanwhile, Damir said Broad had also been brushing up on his fashion credentials.
“We have been doing some fashion shoots together for Myer. He surprised me with how good he was in front of the camera. I had to ask if he had been secretly practising,” she said.
Damir will be joining fellow Myer ambassador on the catwalk at a gala black-tie dinner at Flemington Racecourse on Thursday, September 8, 2022 to mark the 60th anniversary of Fashions On The Field.
