Time On is your Monday wrap-up of all the footy gossip from the weekend.
The return of Brian Taylor’s popular footy segment “Roaming Brian” is imminent.
Despite talk of its demise, the commentator is set to be unleashed again post-game on Friday nights.
“It’s been a long time since we last saw Brian roaming free in the winners’ changerooms,’’ said Channel 7’s managing director Lewis Martin.
“Fortunately for the fans, we won’t have to wait much longer.
“By popular demand, Roaming Brian will be back, better than ever in the coming weeks, with exclusive and unfiltered access to all your favourite characters of the game on Seven’s Friday Night Footy.”
A preview of sorts came on Friday night when Taylor joined Matthew Richardson inside the Bulldogs rooms.
As effusive as ever in his praise of his favourite players, Taylor couldn’t hide his excitement when Dogs star Bailey Smith took the microphone and joined them for a chat.
It’s that passion which is sure to have fans tuning in and which provided colleagues James Brayshaw and Luke Hodge with no end of laughs.
Just a month ago Taylor was unsure if Roaming Brian would be back after it was shelved due to Covid protocols.
Now friends and family are permitted to enter the rooms again, paving the way for Taylor’s return.
Perth’s new glamour couple
Former Miss Universe Australia and Channel 9 weather presenter Scherri-Lee Biggs has unveiled her new romance with West Coast premiership player Daniel Venables.
Biggs went Insta-official on Sunday night, posting with the 23 year-old that “life is better with you”.
The loved-up couple are sure to now be one of Perth’s most glamorous on the social scene. Biggs, 31, previously dated Eagles star Brad Sheppard.
Venables won a flag in his 15th game but six games later, the kid from Keilor suffered bleeds to the brain after a sickening 2019 collision which ended his AFL career.
In March, Venables’ father, Peter, said they had knocked back a payout for his son’s career-ending injury due to it being inadequate.
Venables had expected to receive about $800,000 — double the amount of his final salary at West Coast — from the AFLPA but knocked back the offer because it was well short of that figure.
Duck’s insurance woes
Wayne Carey was left feeling emotional and frustrated after he couldn’t go through with a shoulder replacement because he wasn’t insured for the procedure.
“I was as flat as a tack,’’ Carey said on Triple M’s Sunday Rub.
“Emotions went up, down, from anger, some frustration. The night before you’re about to go in and have a serious operation I got told by my insurance company that I was not insured to have that operation. You could have any operation you wanted except for a replacement.
“I’m still a little emotional about it.”
He urged people to “read the fine print of your insurance,’’ adding “they said I was not insured for any joint replacement. I’ve got top cover but not joint replacement.”
Carey said he could have paid for it out of his own pocket but since paying for top cover since the age of 16 “why the bloody hell now would I go and just fork out a heap of money and pay for it myself. Only a nitwit would do that.”
His co-commentator Ross Lyon said: “We need a GoFund Me page”.
After appearing on SAS Australia Carey’s shoulder got worse. He will likely wait another 12 months.
“I’ve been flat but I’m alright, I’m back now. Because I’m not having it I’ll get back into training,’’ he said.
Will Channel 7 take a punt on Billy?
Could Billy Brownless pop up on Channel 7?
The former Footy Show funnyman was a guest on The Front Bar on Thursday night and was a roaring success.
Co-host Mick Molloy said: “We had to wait til you got sacked by the Channel 9 Footy Show (to have you on) so we knew it wouldn’t be too long”.
Brownless, who hadn’t before been through the corridors at Seven, didn’t pour water on the notion and said he loved his appearance.
Snipers on set
Most cutting comment of the weekend came from former footy hardman Campbell Brown on The Sunday Footy Show.
After going down in Lou’s Handball to his one-time nemesis and panellist Matthew Lloyd, he reignited their rivalry saying: “Snipers are meant to be accurate”.
There were plenty of laughs, as there were earlier in the show when discussing this column’s report last week on tensions described as fractious surrounding the ribbing of host Tony Jones.
The buzz word this week was “harmonious”.
