Aussie men are lazy at seduction and need to up their dud dating game, says MAFS sex expert

Compared to men from other countries, Aussie blokes have no game when it comes to romancing and seducing women, a sexpert believes.

Australian men are lazy in the art of seduction, lacking in “game” and letting themselves down in the romance stakes compared to their overseas counterparts, according to international sexologist and TV star Alessandra Rampolla.

Rampolla, a clinical sexologist with more than 20 years experience, has been dipping into the Australian dating pool when in the country filming the Channel 9 blockbuster Married At First Sight. She is one of the show’s experts.

“Since I have begun working in Australia and having to spend time there and getting to know the social dynamics, I have always been critical of the men and the seduction situation in the singles context,” she said.

“It is very different in Australia than I find it to be in other countries where traditionally men make an effort, make more of an effort.

“You see it a lot with the (MAFS) participants, unless they are really, really, really into their partner, and they are instructed, they don’t generally come up with the seduction part of it.

“There is something there to be fixed in terms of how sexy it is to really put in effort and show somebody that you are building a relationship with that you are interested and they are worth the effort.

“I think it gets lost in the laziness because men think they don’t need to (make an effort).

“Women also of course should put in effort and should be upfront about their interest and be clear. There is nothing sexier than having clarity on whether somebody is into you or not.”

Rampolla revealed during an episode of MAFS in February that she had experienced the Aussie bloke’s lazy version of woo-ing and was moved to ask “where are the men with game? I don’t see men wooing women by being romantic or being gallant.”

Her friends had similar gripes.

“I do see that as a complaint among my girlfriends in Australia, so clearly, I only started recently to get to know Australian culture and the little quirks, but that is one that has stood out to me a lot.”

Rampolla said she had been underwhelmed by many of the MAFS contestants this huge rating season – two million people are watching the show.

“You could say in general the men this year are awful and some of them, their behaviour has been really, really shockingly terrible, and yet there are some men who have behaved beautifully and who give really good examples of different behaviours,” she said.

He described this season’s villain, Harrison Boon, who was paired with Bronte Schofield, as “predictable.”

“When we (she and fellow experts John Aitken and Mel Schilling) get to watch their (the contestant’s) behaviour, it is oftentimes very different to their accounts of themselves and how they handled situations in life,” she said.

“With him, in particular, it was just predictable because week after week after week we saw this very same pattern of lack of accountability and deflection and throwing grenades and just really, in some instances, getting into other people’s business and creating all this chaos around him. It became predictable.”
