VicRoads has taken to social media to stress the fact sex dolls “don’t apply” as passengers for use of Eastern Freeway transit lanes.
In a post on Friday night the Victorian roads regulator reiterated the rules for use of freeway transit lanes, highlighting in yellow the word “people” when it explained how many passengers were required in vehicles for fast lane usage.
The post was headed: “Dolls don’t apply.”
It comes as a sex doll reportedly sold out in Melbourne for the first time ever this week, with claims it was being used as a fake passenger to allow Eastern Freeway commuters to travel in the faster transit lane.
The lifelike and expensive ‘Donna’ sex doll - which sells for more than $3000 - rarely sells through the Melbourne-based sexual wellness retailer Wild Secrets, but on Wednesday sold out for the first time ever, with hourly sales.
“This has never happened in the company’s 30-year history,” Wild Secrets marketing manager Adam Lea said.
“The reason behind this sudden spike in sales, all of which are in Melbourne, seems to be as travel partners for people using the Eastern Freeway.
“The awful traffic on the Eastern has resulted in a coup for us. People are buying dolls so they can use the much faster transit lane.”
It was believed people got the idea after seeing a promotional image of Donna seated behind the wheel of a car, he said.
A customer had also confessed to the company that transit lane travel was the reason for his doll purchase.
Until a couple of months ago, the “niche market” sex dolls sold “pretty infrequently”, Mr Lea admitted.
“Sometimes it would be only two a month . . . but then all of a sudden, recently, it was hourly sales, and now we don’t have any left . . . the only reason we can think of is the Eastern Freeway,” he said.
A sex device has sold out in Melbourne after it was featured on hit show Married At First Sight during its infamous intimacy week.
“Sexual wellness” retailer Wild Secrets recently partnered with MAFS to supply a box of sex toys, with sex expert Alessandra Rampolla holding up and extolling the virtues of the Enchant Rabbit vibrator.
“It’s like an inside, outside vibrator and we sold out of that after MAFS,” Wild Secrets marketing manager Adam Lea said.
