3AW’s top-rating AFL team has secured Eddie McGuire for select games this footy season

Star TV and radio presenter Eddie McGuire has confirmed he will call select games for 3AW this footy season.

Another frosty on-air moment for Neil Mitchell and Eddie McGuire on 3AW

Eddie McGuire will be back behind a microphone calling a select number of footy games for 3AW in 2023.

And he hasn’t ruled out teaming up with his former sparring partner, Tim Lane, for some of those games.

McGuire won’t be calling in a full-time capacity, but confirmed at the 3AW footy season launch on Thursday that he had made himself available to commentate on a handful of games this season for the top-rating station.

“I am normally on AW being attacked by the Rumour File or something,” McGuire joked.

“Obviously I founded Triple M football, so that was a big time in my life, and in recent times I have done a bit of calling on the television, but I always enjoyed calling on the radio.

“I am not going to do a whole lot (of calling) this year, because I have a lot of things going on, but it is nice just to keep your hand in and there are a couple of weeks that have been pencilled in.

“It will be really good to work with some different people. Tim Lane (also part of 3AW footy) came over and said ‘are we calling together?’ which is good because we didn’t at Channel 9 as it turned out.”

Lane and McGuire famously fell out in 2002 over McGuire calling Collingwood games on the Nine broadcast.

Lane had moved to Nine as a Friday night commentator but there was a clause included in his contract that McGuire, the then president of Collingwood, would not be on the calling team for any Friday games involving the Magpies.

McGuire was then announced by Nine as calling every Friday night game.

Lane ended up walking away from Nine and the split between the pair, like any perceived feud between media identities, made wild headlines.

Two decades down the track the delicious prospect of the pair sitting side-by-side on the AW broadcast team could become a reality.

McGuire will be a news breaking force to be reckoned with this year. Melbourne’s most connected man is hungry to shape and shake up the footy news agenda two years after stepping down as the president of Collingwood. Along with Footy Classified, McGuire will launch a podcast with Jimmy Bartel this year and be a presence with the AW team.

“I have deliberately kept quiet for two years and now I am back in the media full time,” he said.

“I have not been unencumbered (as a news breaker) since the 1998 season in many ways, so I will be back out and we will be breaking some stories.

“I think I have an understanding of what works and how the workings of the AFL and clubs are, and I will be unbiased and not extremist by any stretch.

“There is a lot more to discuss and a lot more things to elucidate for the footballing public and to treat the footballing public for what they are, which is very intelligent and understanding.

“I will start off the way I started as a young boy on Channel 10, come up with good stories, break a few yarns and get the conversation going.”
