Media Street: Nine’s shake-up of 3AW continues with long-time football boss made redundant

Nine’s shake-up of 3AW continues with long-time football boss Craig Moore being made redundant.

The popular Moore has run that station’s AFL coverage for almost 10 years but two weeks after the new radio rights were announced Nine’s Sydney-based management have given him the flick.

Moore’s role as ‘Head of Sport - Radio division’ is apparently no longer with the move leaving many of 3AW’s on-air talent, which includes AFL greats Matthew Lloyd, Matthew Richardson, Leigh Matthews and Jimmy Bartel, saddened and disappointed.

The AFL had voiced their concern behind closed doors about the direction 3AW football was heading this year after the station decided to go with Denis Walter’s evening show instead of covering Thursday night games.

Moore made headlines last year when legendary footy and fishing broadcaster Rex Hunt launched an extraordinary on-air attack on him which led to the end of his radio comeback.

Hunt lost his mind when Moore told him to cut short an interview with Hawthorn icon Robert DiPierdomenico because it had run overtime and past a scheduled ad-break.

Nine has revamped its sport content after losing Gerard Healy’s Sportsday show to SEN with his offsider Sam McClure to stay at 3AW to host a new Wide World of Sports program which kicks off on November 1.

AFL MEDIA MANAGER QUITS AFTER JUST 60 DAYS

The winds of change continue to blow through the AFL.

With footy boss Brad Scott departing to Essendon and CEO Gillon McLachlan on his long farewell tour, there is also a surprise opening in the league’s media department.

Stephanie Jones who joined the AFL as its media manager from the Victorian government just two months ago is gone.

The former senior adviser to the Office of the Premier was thrown into a busy time in football and has decided she isn’t suited to the industry.

Jones, who spent four years helping Dan Andrews and had previously worked at the Arts Centre, Channel 9 and Crown Casino, was brought in to replace Nadine Rabah who left the league to become Collingwood’s media boss.

WHO WILL BE TOP DOG IN CHANNEL 7 TRADE DUEL?

You know you’ve made it when a fake Twitter account is created in your honour.

Channel 7’s newshound Mitch Cleary has been the latest to have a burner account pop up with his name on it and there are plenty who have fallen for it including former sports minister Martin Pakula.

The footy world is at its most jumpy this time of the year with trade talk so any mention of possible deals or player movement is instantly consumed and taken as gospel.

On Tuesday the fake Cleary account had two postings which sucked a few in with Pakula replying ‘Wow’.

First there was a trade between Collingwood and Geelong which involved a swap of Max Holmes for Ollie Henry.

And then there was an even funnier one which read as: “Exclusive to #7AFL: Reigning Essendon BnF winner Peter Wright has requested a trade out of Windy Hill. More to come.”

The issue of fake accounts has been a problem in the States particularly in the NBA Twitter world where misinformation is continually widespread.

Cleary has laughed it off although his Channel 7 sidekick Tom Browne understandably doesn’t see the funny side of the fake Twitter account ‘Tom Browne Translator’ which critiques all of his social media work.

The pair have become a fascination within the media industry as they clamber over each other to break stories. There have been numerous examples of tit for tat behaviour which have amused many.

For example Cleary went with Essendon inquiring about Melbourne’s Toby Bedford on the nightly bulletin only for Browne to shoot it down the following day on a podcast saying: “It is my firm understanding today that they are not chasing Bedford”.

Then there was some argy bargy about Brodie Grundy and what Collingwood would have to pay to get him out. Cleary went with $300,000 before Browne went on a Triple M podcast saying sources told him it’s not $300k but closer to $250,000.

It’s all fun and games which is what makes Seven’s ‘Inside Trades’ show during this week’s trade period intriguing to watch with the chemistry of Browne and Cleary sitting next to each other as they duel over who is the top dog.

ESSENDON BOLSTERS MEDIA DEPARTMENT

ONE appointment at Essendon which has lasted more than a day is an addition to the media department.

Will Carter, who recently spent time at the AFL, has joined the Bombers as a replacement for Alexandra Stewart as general manager of communications.

Stewart has decided to pursue opportunities outside of the football industry.

Carter worked as the VFL/W Media Manager for a couple of years after joining the league from racing stable Godolphin where he’d been head of media and content.
