Network and business rivalries were put aside as some of the biggest names of The Footy Show came together for a ‘kinda’ reunion at a private golf club near Eildon.
In a twist it was one of the shortest serving hosts of the iconic show, Craig Hutchison, who rounded up the high profile former members of the program for the ‘boys trip’ to Cathedral Lodge, the private golf course created by merchant banker and former Essendon Football Club president David Evans.
Garry Lyon revealed on his SEN breakfast show on Thursday than an airlift of former Footy Show talent was taking place that morning with helicopters ferrying ex-stars of the legendary program to the exclusive hideaway two hours north east of Melbourne.
The gathering was organised by media boss Hutchison with Lyon, James Brayshaw, Sam Newman, Damian Barrett and Tim Cleary making it onto the flight.
Newman shed more light on the mysterious gathering after touching down with his golf clubs on Friday afternoon.
‘It was ostensibly a get together for people who went overseas with Gary for his 40th birthday some 15 years ago,’ Newman said.
‘It turned out most of the people who were there were on The Footy Show.
‘Bill (Brownless) was invited but couldn’t be there because he had something else on, and Eddie wasn’t there because he had filming commitments with Hot Seat.
‘We had a very enjoyable afternoon on Thursday and a more than enjoyable dinner reminiscing and telling people how good we were and how much better we got the more we spoke about ourselves, and then we played golf again this morning (Friday) and got the choppers home.
‘It was all thanks, I might say, to the extraordinary generosity of Craig Hutchison who is a star and a go-getter and is fast becoming one of the great entrepreneurs of Australian media and sport,’ Newman said.
‘His work ethic is beyond belief and he is a very good operator.’
