Legendary footy commentator Rex Hunt has resurfaced on the airwaves after going through treatment for his mental health.

Hunt called in to SEN radio’s Sportsday program on Anzac Day, as George from Sandringham, to speak with hosts Gerard Healy and Tom Morris, who was filling in for Kane Cornes.

In January Hunt received treatment in Geelong after pulling over on the side of the Princes Highway near Little River, requiring assistance after experiencing a medical episode.

On Tuesday he sounded well, asking Healy a footy question and offering some words of encouragement for Morris who has returned to the media this year.

“I just wanted to ask you a very personal question,” Hunt said to Healy.

“If you had the opportunity of trading your Brownlow that year for a premiership medallion with the Sydney Swans, would you do it? And just an opinion from an old bloke that’s loved footy for a long time, there’s many Brownlow Medallists who are lonely because they can’t get together each year and celebrate what a group of fellas has done.”

Hunt said he was ‘proud’ Tom Morris was back.

Hunt continued to Morris: “Tom, it’s not how you fall down, it’s how you get up and move forward. And young man, just for old blokes who do listen to you, and we’re very proud you’re back, we just need the open line number a little bit more frequently.”

Hunt then referred back to his question to Healy.

“Gerard, the first thing is, you’ve got your Brownlow where ever you keep it, I’ll guarantee you a premiership medallion for life, what are you going to choose?”

Healy responded before the hosts moved on.

“100 per cent the premiership and I appreciate your call George. You only have to look at that euphoria coming off the ground with 100,000 people there today.”

Hunt, 74, developed a cult following during his illustrious 30-year career as a commentator and TV personality.

He quit 3AW in 2021 after an ugly on-air rant at the station’s head of football, Craig Moore.

In July last year, Hunt was caught on camera appearing to wield a garden fork in a disturbing road rage incident.

The former footballer and policeman is also a fishing icon who starred in his own show, Rex Hunt’s Fishing Adventures.
