The rollercoaster life of Warwick Capper hit another slippery slope this week which had eyes rolling for many who have long gone past the time of being surprised by the antics of the former AFL cult hero.
So where to start with the Wiz?
His close confidants and support group describe the one time brothel owner as an overexcited scallywag who doesn’t know when to pull his er, head in, sometimes forgetting his ADHD medication and getting too caught up in the “Capper persona”.
On the other side are the far more serious anecdotes from his behaviour at last year’s Grand Final as a guest of Ultra Tune owner Sean Buckley’s corporate box.
Some may remember Capper once appeared in a sleazy Ultra Tune ad with none other than Pamela Anderson back in 2020 which was widely panned as not just “sexist” – the premise was the former Baywatch star’s boobs bedazzled Capper into a sexual trance – and widely viewed as the epitome of misguided marketing.
Words like “disgraceful” and “ghastly inappropriate” were on repeat, with AFL insiders revealing to Page 13 the extent of Capper’s behaviour and antics during the 2024 Grand Final between his former teams the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions.
Turns out he was evicted from the MCG by security during the second quarter after allegedly inappropriately grabbing a female cater waiter in the Ultra Tune corporate box in addition to allegedly making comments from “you should be in my next porno” to “You’re a nice looking girl. You’d get a job in my brothel.”
The physical behaviour was not enough to warrant a police report, but the allegations of groping and grabbing was certainly enough for an AFL internal investigation, with the MCC following suit and preventing Capper, 62, from an event at the MCG and other AFL venues until 2030.
And then lo-and-behold, in the dirty wash-up of the Wiz’s five-year ban which hit press this week comes the last person you’d expect kicking him when he’s down for inappropriateness, none other than Wayne Carey.
Talk about Carey calling a Capper black, or whatever that pot kettle saying goes.
It turns out two of the biggest egos the AFL has seen, Carey the king of the 90s and Capper the game’s biggest entertainer in the 80s, have been feuding for decades.
Carey, fresh from making his own “streetside stoush headlines” earlier this month after an ugly confrontation outside an inner city pub, calls Capper ‘Vegemite’ because “a little bit goes a long way”. And a bit of Page 13 digging can reveal Carey’s disdain for Capper dates back to an article the former high-flyer penned as a columnist back in the day when living in Queensland.
Let’s just say it was anything but water off a Duck’s back, with Carey holding a grudge for years at Capper’s insults about his off-field antics (of which there are plenty).
Close friends of the pair (surprise, surprise they often mix in the same circles), say it’s never pretty when the two are in the same room, with the feud bubbling and brewing over the years but not quite coming to blows.
Capper himself has never been far from the headlines since he became box office with his high-flying marks, blond mullet, skin tight shorts and white or pink boots making him one of the game’s most recognisable figures.
He brought fans through the gate in Sydney and was the drawcard for flamboyant Swans owner Geoffrey Edelsten whose helicopter – as well as Capper’s pink sports car – appeared in the video clip for the footballer’s foray into pop music with the 1985 single ‘I Only Take What’s Mine’.
A stint as a Gold Coast meter maid, a stripper, a brothel owner and cameos in everything from porno to d-grade movies are just some of the jobs Capper has done since his time on the footy field.
But a pattern of bad behaviour recently has worried his friends, and grossed out patrons, after he allegedly exposed himself, allegedly simulated sex acts, made references to drug use, and claimed he got it on with the wife of the event organiser at a sports club in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Sigh. Cue more eye rolling.
