Wayne Carey filmed in confrontation outside Albert Park pub

Ex-footy star Wayne Carey has been caught up in a streetside confrontation at a popular inner-city pub.

The Herald Sun has obtained exclusive footage of Carey, 54, in a heated exchange involving two other men after an argument between the trio spilt onto the street outside the Albert Park Hotel about 8pm Thursday.

It is understood the incident unfolded after one man, seen wearing a black backpack in the footage, hurled an insult at Carey inside the pub.

In an exclusive statement, Wayne Carey told the Herald Sun that he has previously had dealings with the man in the footage.

“Unfortunately, there are antagonists who target you based on your experiences as a has-been footballer. This individual is a serial harasser — and he chose to repeat his behaviour through vile and obscene slurs, again, last night.”

In the footage, Carey can then be seen grabbing that man by the sleeve of his shirt, while another man can be heard calling out: “Wayne, Wayne, relax”.

That man then yells at the man wearing the backpack to “f--k off” and to “shut the f--k up and go”.

A female voice then yells: “Guys, walk away, people live here”.

“Keep walking … move it on,” she said.

It’s understood the man is known to Carey.

It’s also believed not to be the first run-in with the pair, with the man said to have been harassing the former AFL great for over six months.

A source close to Carey said the man was kicked out of the same venue on Oaks Day eve last year for a similar nature.

On Thursday night an eye witness said the man strode into the Albert Park venue and started yelling and antagonising Carey.

The tense interaction came just moments after Carey was seen in a friendly embrace with controversial journalist Dylan Howard — the former editor in chief of the US tabloid paper the National Enquirer who was embroiled in a hush money plot to help President Donald Trump become president by burying scandalous stories about him.

An Albert Park resident, who was sitting at an outdoor table at the pub when the incident began, said things “got a bit ugly” after Carey and the man were heard yelling at one another inside the venue.

“We could hear there was an altercation of some sort,” she said.

“The security guards were saying to Carey and to this guy in a backpack: “Hey guys, calm down, take it outside, move on, you know, just calm down.

“Carey turned on him after that.

“The guy in the backpack kept on coming back at Carey, trying to inflame the situation more and more. It just went on and on.”

The resident said Carey and the man got stuck into one another for about 20 minutes, wandering across the road to Bridport St and back before the other man tried to break them apart.

“Eventually the guy in the backpack just decided after a bit of pushing and shoving, to go in one direction and Carey went in the other direction,” she said.

“It was quite entertaining.”

Shortly before the altercation, Carey and Howard were spotted at the bar.

“They were very chummy and cosy with each other,” the resident said.

A picture captured of the pair shows Carey with an arm draped over Howard’s shoulder as they both laugh and smile.

As the Enquirer’s editor between 2014 and 2020, Howard allegedly told another boss at the paper that he believed the story about Trump having sex with adult star Stormy Daniels was true, but suggested paying her $120,000 USD to bury the scandal.

That claim emerged amid Trump facing trial for allegedly falsifying business records to keep his 2016 election campaign on track.

Thursday’s argument has become the latest incident in a slew of scandals and questionable conduct by Carey.
