Western Bulldogs player Mitch Wallis and his wife Emily have welcomed their “miracle” second child amid an emotional week of joy and pain for the family.
Wallis revealed Emily had given birth to son William, and said their boy would be “a pillar of healing” as the family deals with a tragic loss following a fatal car accident last week.
Emily’s mother passed away in hospital last Thursday, a week after she was struck by a car while walking in North Melbourne.
Little William was born on Sunday.
“Born 4.1kg … by a powerful, beautiful and loving mum,” Wallis wrote on his Instagram page. “We are pouring our energy into our miracle.
“We feel blessed to be inundated with words of strength, care and support over the past week.
“William is and will continue to be a pillar for healing for our family as he grows under the watchful eye of his nana.”
The newborn is the couple’s first son and a brother to Charlotte, born in June 2020.
Mitch Wallis withdrew from the Bulldogs clash against Adelaide last Saturday, citing personal reasons.
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge later revealed Emily was one week overdue, and her mother had died after being hit by a car.
“Your football club is like a second home,” Beveridge said.
“It has been a really traumatic week … and obviously your football club is like a second home, a second family, and everyone feels that and is really emotional around what is happening with Mitch and Emily and their families.
“We are just hoping everything goes smoothly over the next week or so with Emily and the imminent birth of their child.”
