No support for Riewoldt after heated clash with Caro
Footy great Nick Riewoldt hasn’t won much support from his peers after a heated TV stoush on Monday night.
He labelled North Melbourne president Sonja Hood as “sycophantic” when she appointed coach Alastair Clarkson — comments which Riewoldt’s colleague Caroline Wilson wasn’t going to cop. She said his call was “bordering on sexism”.
“If a male president had lauded getting a premiership coach … you wouldn’t call it sycophantic. I bet you wouldn’t,’’ Wilson said on The Agenda Setters.
Riewoldt responded: “What are you talking about … I resent the fact you think that’s a sexist comment. That is a ridiculous thing to say.
“How is someone being sycophantic got anything to do with their gender?
“That’s ridiculous and you should apologise.
“It’s not sexist Caroline.”
In April Wilson took exception to panellist Kane Cornes making similar comments about Hood, saying his persistent criticism was “verging on bullying”.
Last week she had a feisty spat with host Craig Hutchison over his SEN purchase of RSN.
On Tuesday Garry Lyon and Tim Watson both agreed that Hood wasn’t sycophantic, while Jonathan Brown said he’d inch towards Caro on this one.
“I can remember back to it. I thought it was a coup,’’ Watson said on SEN. “She spoke glowingly about what a coup it was and how remarkable it was. I didn’t think it was sychophantic.”
Lyon said: “You’re going to sing from the treetops aren’t ya?”
Brown also had no issue with Hood’s comments.
“I think it’s more selling hope to the fans,’’ he said. “When you’re from a struggling club, certainly financially, which I’ve been a part of … you’re trying to sell hope to the fans aren’t you. No doubt she would celebrate and sing from the rooftop about that. So probably inch towards Caro on this one.”
Papley’s cheeky midnight message to Greene just a big fat joke
Sydney forward Tom Papley — who was prodded with an overweight jibe by GWS captain Toby Greene — followed up with a cheeky midnight message.
Suspended Greene revealed a humorous postscript to his battle with Papley after the halftime interview which went viral last Friday night.
The pair had been exchanging barbs when a frustrated Greene told Ben Dixon’s Fox Footy:
“He’s looking overweight, we’ll see how he goes in the second half.”
It appeared to be in response to Papley having a dig at GWS’s Jake Stringer over his weight.
And two can play that game as revealed by Greene.
“I was sitting on the couch at midnight, had got home and I was just watching Tour de France,” he said on the Ausmerican Aces podcast.
“And on my Instagram message ‘Tom Papley’ comes up and I go ‘oh here we go’. I was like what’s this going to be.
“And it’s just a photo of him eating McDonald’s. It was pretty funny, I had a good laugh at that — that was good by him. It was pretty sharp by him.”
Veteran newshound’s vent after umpiring call
Veteran newshound Nick McCallum was one of many Melbourne fans incensed after the final minute of Sunday’s nailbiter at Marvel Stadium.
The team had just given up a 46-point lead and confusion reigned when the umpires paid a free kick with eight seconds left.
He vented on X: “That was THE worst performance of umpiring I have ever seen in 58 years of going to the footy. No one knew what was going on. Absolutely appalling. AFL must act to make sure it never happens again.”
McCallum clarified that he understood the Demons lost a game they never should have, but “both teams had no idea what was going on”.
Curiously, a few hours later on Sunday night McCallum — the Channel 7 and 3AW newsman — had removed the tweet. Perhaps a calmer mind prevailed after the shock of the loss.
Thomas and Cornes coverage flip
Dale Thomas and Kane Cornes will swap nights on the footy coverage this week with Thomas’ wife Tash due to go into labour at any moment.
Thomas will remain in Melbourne doing the Thursday night match between the Bulldogs and GWS at Marvel while Cornes will stay in Adelaide to work Friday night on the Crows v Hawks match at Adelaide Oval.
Returning mum Abbey Holmes will travel to Adelaide with her baby Brax.
Holmes posted to social media that she’d been given a private room to pump breast milk pre-game and at halftime last week.
Brad Scott Bombers dig
Former North Melbourne star Corey McKernan had a cheeky dig at Essendon coach Brad Scott.
McKernan reacted to a social media post by the Bombers, which showed Scott talking to the club’s former champions as they celebrated the 2000 premiership team at Marvel Stadium.
“Good to see he could say hello to the past players when they make the effort to go into the rooms … must be a new thing he’s started doing,” McKernan wrote on social media, with a sarcastic wink.
Scott coached North Melbourne from 2010 to 2019, after McKernan had retired, and had a frosty relationship with many of North’s former champions.
In the address, Scott said the 2000 premiership team was “arguably the best team of all time”. “(They) really set the benchmark in the competition for what a premiership team could look like. Had an all-time great season in 2000,” he said.
Eagle’s supremacy reigns at Marvel
Former Eagle Mark LeCras was keeping a close watch on Jeremy Cameron at Marvel Stadium.
LeCras’ 12 goal haul in Round 16, 2010, still remains the record after Cameron ended with a career high 11 against North Melbourne.
LeCras posted a picture to his Instagram story with a crown on to the tune of Elton John’s I’m Still Standing. Well played.
