Kenyah Hura ignoring trolls, determined to set good example after scene stealing best and fairest moment

Kenyah Hura is undeterred by “misogynistic and degrading” trolls and says she’ll continue setting a good example for women after her scene-stealing appearance at Carlton’s best and fairest night.

Kenyah Hura, partner of retired Blues defender Lachie Plowman, has hit back at “misogynistic and degrading” comments from online trolls following her scene-stealing moment at Carlton’s best and fairest on Sunday night.
Ms Hura, undeterred by the “chaos” her boob-revealing thigh high black frock seemingly caused, says she wants to keep setting a good example for women.

“In terms of the attention, I really didn’t think it would cause this much chaos,’’ Ms Hura, 27 said.

“I appreciate all the love and kind messages and comments I’ve received from everyone; I wore what I did simply because I wanted to, as did Lachie.

“Contrary to negative comments I am happy with who I am and haven’t had any work done to my face/body and no fake tan was harmed in the process — I am a Maori and Aboriginal woman and am blessed with beautiful brown skin that I am very proud of.”

Hura added she’d seen many “misogynistic and degrading comments from both males and females based purely on what I’ve worn”.

“It’s disheartening to see that I’m being called a ‘bad example’ for younger women when the way I see it, the people judging me are doing more harm for our community and teaching the wrong thing to younger generations,’’ she said.

“I have a younger sister and aspire to be the best possible role model; not everyone’s going to like you and that’s okay, if you like yourself and you’re happy that’s truly all that matters.

“I have a supportive and loving partner, beautiful family and friends and I know who I am so honestly, I’m not affected by what others have to say but I know this is not true for everyone. I’ve seen throughout the years being around the AFL system how cruel and harsh people can be and there’s no need for it, strive to do better.”

Hura, born in Melbourne, moved to Perth with her family at age 10 and then moved back to Melbourne six years ago. The model is currently halfway through completing a Bachelor in Youth Work and loves cooking, reading and being close to the beach.

“My biggest inspiration is my potential with my motivation to succeed in the youth work sector and create change to empower and advocate for young people,’’ she said.

“It took me a little longer to figure out what I wanted to do but I am genuinely so happy and motivated to be doing what I am doing and can only encourage others that there’s no rush, all you have is time.

“I work in administration during my semesters at university as well as an organisation that fights for inequality to end injustice and poverty at a local and global scale in my university breaks.”

She said Plowman would be missed by the footy community.

“The JN (John Nicholls) Medal Awards night on Sunday were beautiful,’’ she said.

“It allowed everyone to come together and celebrate what an inspiring season both the Carlton AFL and VFL teams had for the 2023 season. I’m always so honoured to be alongside my partner and being able to celebrate his incredible 11-year career was even more special. I am so proud of everything Lachie has achieved on and off the field, he is an amazing person and I know he will be truly missed by everyone at the club.”

She added: “I truly do appreciate all the kindness I’ve received; it makes the world a better place. We shouldn’t have to accept people forcing their ‘opinion’ onto us or that there will always be someone with something negative to say, stand up for yourself and most importantly stand together. You should be able to feel confident within yourself and embrace that whichever way you choose to.”
