Jason Akermanis has opened up about his wife’s sudden breast cancer diagnosis, revealing she underwent a double mastectomy two weeks ago.
The three-time premiership Lion said Megan had been perfectly healthy before finding a lump a month ago.
He’s wondered whether it’s bizarrely related to the Covid jab.
“It happened straight after she had the Covid jab, and she felt a lump,” Akermanis said.
“It’s very strange. She’s one of the lowest-risk people on the planet, doesn’t drink much and is pretty active.
“It’s not spreading and it’s self-contained so she felt the safest option is a double mastectomy and she’ll undergo rebuilding in two to three months.
“She’s recovering well but probably needs some radiation. It was really quick but could have been worse.”
Akermanis was in Melbourne for the Lions’ 20-year 2002 premiership reunion during grand final week and then returned to Brisbane to be by Megan’s side with their three daughters aged four, 14 and 17.
Now a real estate agent and auctioneer, he said he was amazed by the courage of his speech therapist wife who celebrated her 43rd birthday in hospital.
“She is quite positive, they are concerned a little but she’s a great researcher and went through with everything,” she said.
Akermanis said he had received much support from former teammates who are still friends of the family.
