‘I’ve been in hospital three days a week for most of first trimester, unable to keep anything down or leave bed with relentless nausea’

Channel 7 presenter Abbey Gelmi and ex Richmond player Kane Lambert have revealed they are expecting their second child, but the pregnancy has not been a smooth one with the TV star suffering “relentless” nausea.

The engaged couple welcomed their first child, Louis, in March last year.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Gelmi said she’d been absent from work duties recently due to struggling with a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum.

It is the same condition that has previously struck down the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton in pregnancy.

“Pregnancy is such a sensitive subject and my thoughts are with those struggling, however, I wanted to share our experience with hyperemesis in the hope that others who endure it know they’re not alone,” Gelmi wrote.

“While we’re so grateful to be adding to our family, HG has been debilitating. I’ve been in hospital three days a week for most of the first trimester, unable to keep anything down or leave bed with relentless nausea. I’d get dizzy when I stood, couldn’t care for Louis and my mental health took a dive.

“It can be terribly isolating, but there is help available and @hyperemesisaustralia is a great place to start.”

Gelmi started the post “Baby Lambert 2.0 coming ‘24”.

She said other mums such as Emma Vosti and Emma Hawkins, who had shared their stories with the condition, had helped her immensely.

“ … and I hope I can do the same by sharing more when the time is right,” Gelmi continued.

“We’re so grateful to our people, especially my mum who has been herculean. I’ve received wonderful care from our OB and the nurses at @frances_perry_house where I’ve become part of the furniture. Work have been so accommodating, I can’t thank Seven and iHeart enough for the grace and time to recover.

“It’s a relief to be at the stage where we can share why I’ve been absent from commitments that mean a lot to me. While I’m still unwell, I’m coming out of the fog and slowly returning to regular programming, but most importantly being mum.

“Two under two, we’re going to be busy @kanelambert.”

Gelmi and Lambert struck up a romance early in 2021 soon after the Perth-raised presenter made the move to Melbourne.

The three-time premiership Tiger announced his retirement in July 2022 after 135 games and a string of injuries. He has stayed at the club as a development coach.

They announced their engagement in September last year.
