Tom Gleeson is the reigning Gold Logie winner and it’s no joke to the comedian.
Gleeson was accused of making a mockery of the TV awards after his campaign and tongue in cheek acceptance speech last year.
But the Hard Quiz host says he is proud of the recognition and the fact he gets another year to brag after this year’s awards were cancelled.
“I’ve got to stop laughing when I talk about the Logies,’’ Gleeson said.
“To me it was good fun at the time. I was doing it to be entertaining and enjoy myself but the number of weird coincidences that kept piling up.
“Grant Denyer said it was the last Logies ever if I’d won, and to be fair he was taking the p … as well. Then I pick up that ball and say welcome to the last ever Logies as a joke.
“And then a year later no one could predict it would be cancelled.
“That’s the funny thing, people think I hate the Logies.
“I do host a show that’s popular, that’s what people forget.
“It does give me a lot of satisfaction. I won Australia’s brainiest radio star which was a TV show made over 10 years and before that I won a maths prize when I was in high school in year 10. I don’t have many awards so I do treasure it.”
Gleeson is isolating at home, in the Victorian country town of Romsey.
His comedy show Joy was filmed for Amazon Prime and will drop tomorrow.
“We placed the cameras in there but you didn’t know they were there so it’s a genuine live show,’’ he said.
“Hopefully I’ll start again in October and I’ll pick up where we left off. As soon as they give us the green light I’ll be out there. And I’m guessing walking onto the stage it’ll be a feeling of mass relief.”
