Channel 10 is reaping the reward of a much more consistent entertainment line-up in 2020 with new figures showing that it has overtaken Seven in viewers between 7.30pm and 10.30pm weeknights.
Nine is leading the pack with a 27.2 per cent audience share across the first 17 weeks of the year thanks to hits including the Australian Open tennis, Married at First Sight, and LEGO Masters.
But Ten has jumped past Seven into second place with a 19.3 share due to I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here, Australia Survivor: All Stars, MasterChef Australia, and Gogglebox.
Seven is third with 18.9 after patchy cricket results and the flop of My Kitchen Rules: The Rivals. House Rules: High Stakes is also struggling to nail viewers.
The gap is even more pronounced with Under 50s where Nine has a 28.8 per cent share to Ten’s 23.0 and Seven’s 18.3.
Seven hopes to bounce back when it launches Big Brother, hosted by Sonia Kruger in coming weeks.
“Ten has been consistently tweaking their 7.30pm Aussie reality series and this year they have hit pay dirt,” media analyst Steve Allen said.
“Seven is in a terrible position and desperately needs Big Brother to work but it is the third revamp (after seasons on Ten and Nine) so there are no guarantees.”
Ten has more ammunition up its sleeve. Hit comedy series Have You Been Paying Attention? returns next Monday.
Season two of How to Stay Married, with and Lisa McCune, screens the following night. MasterChef Australia is up 49 per cent year-on-year.
“We are very pleased that Australians have responded so well to our content this year – and there is more great content to come,” Ten program chief Beverley McGarvey said.
Seven’s saving grace has been its monster 6pm news figures. When those are factored in its audience share bumps up to 24.4 per cent.
Nine’s share between 6pm and 10.30pm is 29.5 and Ten’s is 16.7.
