A Melbourne brewery with high profile investors Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy has won three gold medals and 12 silvers at the world’s biggest beer competition.

“It’s been great fun and now that Mick is leaving some stock for the general public it’s really getting a great following,” McGuire said.

“The management and brewers do a great job, all locally brewed here in Melbourne, while the rest of us enjoy the fruits of their labour.”

He added: “It’s wonderful that a local start-up is not only enjoyed by the public but also the expert tasters as well.”

Broadcasters McGuire and Molloy, former NRL star Billy Slater, former All Black Dan Carter, and restaurateur Shane Delia are shareholders in Melbourne’s Brick Lane Brewing, which won three gold and 12 silver medals at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) on Friday.

The gold medal brews were Brick Lane Lager, One Love Pale Ale, and the Someday Sour Blood Orange beer.

Molloy said on his Triple M radio show on Friday: “I spend my life researching (beer). But well done to everybody at Brick Lane. I love the beer, and I’m really rapt for everyone on board.”

The brewery, based in Dandenong, was co-founded by Paul Bowker, Andrew Scrimgeour and Melbourne Storm owner Bart Campbell, and opened its doors in 2018.

Bowker, the brewery’s CEO, said “The amazing results achieved at the AIBA’s are validation of the incredible talent of the brewing team at Brick Lane. Australia has the opportunity to lead the world in brewing.”

The Australian International Beer Awards is the largest annual beer competition in the world. The 2021 contest saw 75 judges taste 2500 entries from 402 breweries, from 21 countries.

Brick Lane won silver medals at the AIBA for Someday Sour Mango and Peach Beer, Red Hoppy Ale, Revolver Dark Hoppy Ale, Backyarder Crisp Lager, Morningstar Belgian Dark Ale, Welcome To Hollywood Pina Colada, and Fine Line Lager.

It also took bronze medal honours for the Brick Lane Draught, Supernova IPA and Avalanche Hazy IPA.

Three years ago, when Molloy joined the Brick Lane team, he said: “This is a classic case of I liked it so much I bought into the company. It (beer) is my strong suit, it is my favourite topic. Congratulations to me. Dreams do come true.”
