Colour and dare reigned as the W Awards stamped itself as footy’s fun and cool night of celebration.

Long gowns, cut outs, midriffs, thighs, cleavage and power suits were all on show as the women’s competition gathered at Crown to mark the upcoming end of an eighth season.

Award-winning Aussie singer G Flip, a special guest with American wife Chrishell Stause, said: “I love this, I’m friends with a lot of the girls. It’s always a great night, I feel like the Women’s Awards are more relaxed than the Brownlow. It’s just more fun.”

Many players wore black including Richmond stars Monique Conti, styled by Lana Wilkinson, and captain Katie Brennan.

Businesswoman Sophie Cachia hard launched with her partner of a year, Essendon’s Sophie Van De Heuvel.

“I’m here to support her,” Cachia said.

“Always such an advocate for the competition. It’s a nice change to see everyone out of their footy shorts. I’ve got lots of beautiful friends that I see working hard. My nine-year-old boy is very jealous he’s not here.”

The most daring outfit was a sheer see-through number worn by Collingwood’s Charlotte Taylor.

“I’m out of my comfort zone but I just got it from a rental store,” she said.

“I haven’t worn anything like it. It’s a bit see through, a bit daring and it’s my first W Awards so why not.”

Channel 7 commentator Abbey Holmes, also in black, stepped out after her November 6 wedding at Uluru.

She is heading off on a honeymoon to the US and Europe straight after Sunday’s grand final.

“I feel like with women’s competition, they’re a little bit more exuberant,” she said.

“We see a lot more characters and colour. I think it’s North’s time and they’ll shine on Sunday.”

AFL executive Kylie Rogers said: “There’s a unique vibe about tonight that is utterly joyous. Celebrating great talent and having fun at the same time.”
