Footy couple Abbey Gelmi and Kane Lambert have revealed they are expecting their first child.
Gelmi, 7News’ sport presenter, and Lambert, recently retired Richmond star, will become parents early next year.
The happy news explains why Gelmi, co-host of the Commonwealth Games coverage in July/August, had to step away due to illness.
“While it’s been a such special time, I’ve been quite unwell,” Gelmi told the Herald Sun.
“I could not have felt more supported by my work family at Seven and I am so grateful for the grace they’ve given me, especially during the Commonwealth Games.
“It’s been a very busy few months for us and we’re excited about what’s to come.”
Gelmi and Lambert struck up a romance early last year soon after the Perth-raised presenter made the move to Melbourne.
The three-time premiership Tiger, 30, announced his retirement in July after 135 games and a string of injuries. He will be staying at the club as a development coach.
The pair stepped out for Richmond’s Jack Dyer Medal last week at Crown, where Lambert received the Francis Bourke award – presented to the player who best upholds the club’s values – for the second time.
Gelmi, a rising star at the Seven network having co-hosted the Tokyo Olympics and Winter Olympics, has kept her relationship relatively private while taking on her dream job with Seven.
She took over the presenting reins at the weekend sports desk and at Footy Central during the footy coverage after Jacqui Felgate left the network.
In May the couple gave a sneak peek into the frames of their dream home which they are building from scratch and documenting on Instagram.
