‘A lot of freaks down there will grow to love us’: Kyle Sandilands says of broadcasting in Melbourne

Powerhouse Sydney radio presenter Kyle Sandilands has made a bold boast as he and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson prepare to enter the Melbourne market.

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson have declared they will be the no. 1 breakfast show in Melbourne.

The powerhouse Sydney pair officially enter the breakfast radio market here on April 29 with Sandilands saying he expects the “freaks down there” will grow to love them.

“I don’t think it’ll be straight away, it’ll take a few surveys to crack them realistically so I don’t think it’ll be immediate, but by the end of the year yes,’’ Sandilands told the Herald Sun.

“It’s a complete new show, the whole show in its entirety is different for Melbourne. When we had a national show we rated our arse off in Melbourne and we’ll have those listeners in there and a whole new group of listeners that will find their home with us.”

Kyle Sandilands expects the show to be no. 1 by the end of the year.

Henderson said the award-winning duo weren’t preoccupied with the opposition.

“Personally for me, I don’t want to think about that,’’ she said.

“We’ll just do our thing and whether that’s a slow burn or instant impact, I have faith it will be the no. 1 show eventually.

“I don’t want to place too much emphasis on that first survey, we don’t think about ratings and we just have fun.”

Sandilands has already ruffled some feathers by igniting a war of words with Jase Hawkins who is the new Nova co-host with Lauren Phillips.

He said he hit back at Hawkins because he feels he told a fib.

“I like Jase, I don’t know Lauren at all,’’ Sandilands said.

“He was my protege and he started working for me straight out of school. He’s very good. The reason I said it (he had the sh … est show) was because he went on TV and sort of told a bit of a lie.

“He said he didn’t know anything about (our move) and found out. That’s not exactly true and he rang me a month before and said is there any truth to this and I said I was surprised he didn’t already know. He was a bit bent out of shape about it, there’s been friendships there for years, and I said it’s on offer but we haven’t signed the deal but we intend to.

“I was shocked he didn’t know. He thanked me for letting him know, he was shocked and shattered but that’s a bit of a bulls--t story. Woe is me. He’s a Brisbane boy for f … sake, you’ve adopted a red head boy.

Jase Hawkins takes a playful swipe at Kyle Sandilands ahead of radio return

“There’s nothing wrong with these shows, nothing wrong with Fifi’s show. We don’t give a sh-t what other shows do, go off and do whatever. A lot of freaks down there will grow to love us.”

Sandilands said he might come down to Melbourne for the “occasional bender” but he and Henderson didn’t understand the argument that they won’t work because they’re not broadcasting in Melbourne.

“It’s a lie the radio industry has made up — Today or Sunrise don’t broadcast from Melbourne … you don’t only listen to Melbourne podcasts. It’s bulls--t,’’ Sandilands said.
