Sons Of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has taken time out of his movie schedule to visit patients at the Veterans Psychiatry Unit at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.

Hunnam, in Melbourne filming Shantaram, spent two and a half hours at the VPU, also known as Ward 17, where he met 14 veterans.

David Dent, promoter of Vetrok, a music festival fundraiser for veterans, accompanied Hunnam’s visit to the ward.

“He does a lot of work with veterans in America,” Mr Dent told Confidential. “He was very keen to lend his time and an ear to the men and women in Ward 17.”

Hunnam was so touched by one story, he sent a video message saying he would have a “challenge coin” sent from LA to a veteran, in the hope it would give her strength.

Hunnam had the challenge coins (also known as membership coins) made after Sons Of Anarchy wrapped, and gave them to cast and crew.

The coin, with a new video message from Hunnam (pictured below) arrived in Melbourne last week.

“PTSD is like having a demon in your head that says ‘You’re no good, nobody likes you, and you’ll never amount to anything,’” Mr Dent said. “To have someone of Charlie’s stature come in … challenges those voices.”

Mr Dent added: “Charlie was so humble, with no ego, and no arrogance. He really cared.”

Vetrok 2019 will be staged at Lardner Park, in Warragul, on December 7 and 8.

Acts on the bill include Russell Morris, Mike Rudd (of Spectrum), Matt Taylor (of Chain) and Boo Crash Opera’s Dale Ryder.

All monies will go to Ward 17, and equine therapy and emotional assistance dogs for veterans.
