Hunnam, who spent the evening ringside, may have wanted to go unnoticed, but word quickly spread that the pin-up was in the house.
Hunnam, a boxing and martial arts enthusiast, told fellow fight fans he would be in Melbourne for “a while” filming.
He spent time with martial artist and stuntman Richard Norton and spoke to fight promoter Jake Ellis.
Production is believed to have quietly started on the movie on July 23 with filming expected to start soon.
The film is directed by Justin Kurzel and is based on the book by Peter Carey.
The cast includes Essie Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Sean Keenan, Earl Cave and Harry Greenwood.
Happily for the residents of the Victorian town of Clunes, north of Ballarat, filming will take place in their town hall for two days next month.
