After being engaged for three years, Abbey Holmes and Keegan Brooksby have locked in their magical wedding.

The Channel 7 footy commentator and her partner – a former AFL player and now talent development manager — will marry next month in the Northern Territory, which holds a special spot in Holmes’s heart.

“It’s a place that was a massive part of my journey to where I am today and a place that means a lot to us,” she said.

“So many of our guests haven’t been to that part of the world so it’s pretty special to be able to get back there and share with them why we love it so much.”

Holmes and Brooksby’s six-year love story will be sealed before 100 guests including her Channel 7 colleagues Brian Taylor and Luke Hodge, some of her friends from when she competed on Survivor Australia including Lydia Lassila flying in from Finland, plus premiership Magpie Mason Cox.

She will wear a gown by Oglia-loro Couture, styled by Lana Wilkinson, and they will each have one person beside them: Holmes’s sister and Brooksby’s school friend.

Holmes and Brooksby, who is head of AFLW development and the academy at Hawthorn, and was formerly listed by the Eagles, Suns and Hawks, met at the end of 2017 on dating app Bumble.

“I had just moved back to Adelaide from Darwin for my second year at the Crows and Keegan had just moved back to Adelaide from his time at the Gold Coast Suns,” Holmes said.

“I was his first Bumble date and he was mine so we’re 100 per cent strike rate. One and done. Our first date went for like seven or eight hours so you know that you’re on to a good thing when you’re not checking the time or worried about getting home.”

Brooksby said of his feelings: “It became very obvious very quickly.”

With their hectic schedules revolving around football, the couple savour any time together.

Holmes is competing on SAS Australia, a gruelling program that was filmed before the AFL season and wasn’t too kind to her body after four knee operations, chronic hamstring injuries and a bad back.

She has hung up the footy boots but has become one of the AFL’s premier TV field commentators.

Before the end of the year the couple are looking to put down roots and buy a home in Melbourne.

“Between the two of us we get to March and it’s kind of a see you in December vibe when the seasons wrap up,” she said.

They at least had time to plan an epic seven-week honeymoon.

They will head off after the AFLW grand final in December to San Francisco, Vegas, Miami, a cruise through the Caribbean, New York for Christmas and then London, Paris, Prague, Rome and the Maldives.
