‘Yes she can’: Abbey Holmes eyes off AFL footy calling role

Channel 7 star Abbey Holmes is quietly learning the art of calling an AFL footy game — and she’s determined to make her dream a reality.

Channel 7 star Abbey Holmes is making a play to call AFL footy.

Holmes, who is part of the Channel 7 AFL broadcast team, is quietly learning the art of calling a footy game, with vastly experienced TV and radio footy commentator Brian Taylor helping her with the craft.

“It is 100 per cent on the vision board and ultimately something I would love to work towards, but it does take a lot of time and effort and practice and sitting on your own in your lounge room with the TV on mute and just practising and practising,” Holmes said.

“It takes time. It is certainly something I would love to do in the future.

“BT has been unreal. He has been unbelievable in the support he has shown me over the last few years.

“BT is like ‘let’s sit together, we will practise, we will call a game, what can I do to help?’, whereas I am the one going ‘Oh my god, I can’t let you hear me until I am at a certain level.’

“It takes years and years of practice.”

While Holmes is taking small steps, with a great mentor in her corner and a deep love of the game, she is set on achieving her goal.

“I am the type of person that once I set my mind to something there is nothing or nobody that is going to stop me from achieving that goal,” she said.

“I have always been mentally strong and driven to achieve the goals that I do set for myself.”

Holmes is presenting the AFLW Premiership Cup at Sunday’s grand final between Brisbane and Melbourne at Springfield in Brisbane.

“Hands down the best two sides in the competition going head to head in the grand final this year. It is going to be a great match,” she said.
