The Star employs 2500 people on the Gold Coast and is in the middle of a major program of investment at its Broadbeach site. Here’s what to expect.

STAR Entertainment Group’s decision to shed 20 per cent of salaried staff won’t impact the construction of a third tower or the fast-tracking of a fourth on its Broadbeach site, it says.

In the wake of this morning’s announcement by Star it was bringing forward staff cost cutting to save $40-$50 million a year, a spokesman said of its Broadbeach site construction plans: “It will not impact the Dorsett hotel tower or the plans to proceed with the next tower.”

The gaming resort giant is in the midst of an ambitious expansion in southeast Queensland with a third Broadbeach site building – Australia’s first Dorsett hotel – under construction.

Earlier this month, the Bulletin revealed Star Gold Coast had launched pre-sales of apartments in the fourth building at its Broadbeach island with construction fast-tracked to begin next year.

The new towers will add to the original Star Grand hotel and casino and The Darling suite tower which was completed in March last year.

Each of the new towers will have hero pools, new restaurant and bar options whilst a new plaza area double the size of the Star Grand’s Garden bar lawn will also be built for 1000-plus functions.

The Star Gold Coast has 2500 staff on site in total but it is not clear how many of those are salaried positions and how many will be impacted.

Star Entertainment Group was informing staff of the impacts this morning.

All up, Star’s workforce nationally sits at about 9000 and has been forecast to surge to about 16,000 off the back of Star Gold Coast’s ongoing transformation and the construction of the giant Queen’s Wharf resort in Brisbane.
