THE Gold Coast is in the mood to celebrate as the city’s iconic name turns 60 years young.

One of the Coast’s biggest music exports will return home to headline the festivities, with Amy Shark confirmed as the major act for next month’s public celebration.

The free birthday bash will be held at Broadwater Parklands in Southport on July 13 between 3-7pm.

Mayor Tom Tate made the announce this morning, revealing the entertainment will be provided by an all local lineup.

Gold Coast acts The Lamoplights, Eliza & The Delusionals and the Hanlon Brothers will also be hitting the stage.

Shark said she adores the Gold Coast and is excited to come home to perform “where it all began.”

“There is nothing better than a Gold Coast party,” she said.

The announcement follows Shark’s Artist of the Year win at the Gold Coast Music Awards last month.

Gold Coast City Council announced late last year that it would host a massive public party to mark 60 years since the region was renamed from South Coast to Gold Coast.

At the time Mayor Tom Tate, who will also celebrate his 60th birthday this year, said the milestone was one worthy of celebration.

“This will be a major event and it should be one of the biggest parties we have ever had. We deserve it,” he said.

It originally picked up ‘Gold Coast’ as a nickname on the back of soaring property prices.

The city increasingly became known by its nickname, with the South Coast Town Council adopting it in October 1958 and the name formally accepted by the State Government in May 1959.
