REPLAY: South Queensland Rugby League Grand Final – Marsden SHS vs Palm Beach Currumbin

PALM Beach Currumbin State High School has produced state, national and international-level sporting superstars and on Friday, March 4, the school will honour its most capable alumni.

In line with its 50-year anniversary celebrations, PBC has already named its netball, football and Aussie rules teams of the half-century and on Friday, its top rugby league products will earn the same honour.

“I’m glad I wasn’t on that committee,” PBC head of sport excellence Neil Mackay said.

“I think the school has either 51 or 52 young men who have played NRL and out of that you have to choose a squad of 17 – that’s tough.

“There’s a lot of depth in that program. It’s been a leader for a long time in its area and it will be a red-hot team.”

However the showpiece event of the evening will be the crowning of 18 hall of fame inductees, from a stacked list of 54 school alumni that all went on to become household names in their chosen sporting fields.

The school’s sporting brains trust has produced a list of three nominees from each major sport, with one athlete to be elevated into the hall of fame.

“It’s a very high calibre (list),” Mackay said.

“All of those recipients should be proud, and their teacher-coaches as well who over the years have been involved with them.

“It’s a who’s-who (of sport) and the great thing is, when ringing them to talk about what we’re doing now, they’re all so quick to ask how they can give back.”

Mackay said of the 18 hall of fame inductees, 14 had been locked in to attend the event while the remaining four had sent in video messages offering their thanks.

“We can’t wait to celebrate, it’s going to be a great night having those people back (at school) and celebrating their success,” he said.
